Buying Director - Proteins

We are looking for our Buying Director with a focus on Proteins, a hugely exciting opportunity to support the growth of the buying efforts for a VC-backed business in the food industry. This role will set our organisation up for explosive growth in the UK by helping us buy better, build strong and caring relationships with food producers across the globe, negotiate long-term agreements to bring pricing reliability and consistency to the business but also our customers.

We have ambitious plans and are growing fast. Our aim is now to give as much weight and focus to the supply side of our business as we did on the demand side. Operating in the UK and France, we’re convinced that now is the right time to accelerate growth and that’s why we’re looking for our Buying Director with a focus on Proteins (meat, poultry and seafood ideally) to help us grow as fast as possible whilst establishing strong operational and supply foundations.

You will benefit from flexible hours and optional remote working. While the position will be remote working only to begin with, as social restrictions ease, some office work will be required to interact with the broader team, so you should be London-based or able to travel, as necessary.

Why Collectiv Food?

Collectiv Food is a fast-growing next generation food supply business, on a mission to transform how food is accessed and distributed within cities. Founded in 2018, we are based in West London and supported by industry experts and leading venture investors, such as Partech, Frontline and Mustard Seed. We are building a unique food supply model, with greener last mile delivery; sourcing quality ingredients directly from a network of over 1,000 producers and delivering to hundreds of professional kitchens. Our vision is to lead the transition to a sustainable, fair and transparent food supply chain.

What you’ll be doing

Your primary duty is to lead the buying activity in meat, poultry and seafood product categories, including:

  • Buying at the best possible terms, whilst being fair and building and nurturing long-term relationships

  • Establishing best practice within the procurement function and setting high standards for the business

  • Building buying power and negotiating good terms, prices and long-term agreements with our food producers

  • Bringing your experience and network of food producers to bear, to achieve optimal outcomes for the business

  • Developing metrics and market data monitoring to build a clear benchmark strategy on pricing

  • Constantly reviewing COGS and prices with margins reports and finance

  • Setting ambitious targets on price improvements and gross margins for us to sell better and grow faster

  • Working and collaborating closely with the commercial, finance and supply chain teams and other roles focusing on supply to develop clear long-term strategies

  • Ensuring business with both new and existing producers is compliant with our sourcing policy and sustainability principles

What we’re looking for

  • Years of experience in the food wholesale industry, and more specifically in the buying of ingredients (meat, poultry and seafood) for a distributor, foodservice operator or manufacturer

  • A deep understanding of how the supply side is encompassed in the broader food supply chain

  • A strong understanding of how farms, abattoirs and processors work and their production and operational technicalities (e.g. carcasse balance, packaging and logistics)

  • An appreciation and informed view of the challenges across the food supply chain in producing and delivering products sustainably and views on the measures being taken to address them

  • Someone who can take ownership, execute fast and report in an efficient way

  • A great negotiator who also cares about relationships and being fair

  • A creative mind and an analytical approach to problem solving

  • A great communicator (external and internal)

  • Some with operational experience who can demonstrate commercial acumen

  • An abundance of energy and drive

Added bonuses (or the cherries on top!)

  • An existing and extensive network of food producers ready to be activated

  • Experience in buying not only from UK producers, but also from EU and worldwide producers

* The qualifications and experiences above are a guide and we would still love to hear from you if you believe you have the necessary skills to excel with us.

What you'll get

  • Competitive salary with industry-matching pay reviews

  • 25 days annual leave plus 8 public holidays

  • Compelling benefits package, such as high-spec laptop and equipment, pension and more!

  • Plus, you get lots of food perks like delicious product samplings and food discounts from our customers

  • Great exposure and ability to impact a fast-growing, mission-driven food start-up

  • As a rapidly scaling start-up with a recent Series A funding round under our belt, the opportunities for progression are endless. We support progression in many forms from upward progression as either a specialist individual contributor or people manager as well as lateral progression into other teams at Collectiv Food for which you have transferable skills or have demonstrated the potential and desire to learn

  • Flexible Working – whilst ideally we are looking for someone on a full-time basis, we are more focused on finding the right person to join us, trusting people to organise and take accountability for delivering whilst supporting their needs, responsibilities, and interests outside of work. If you are looking for alternative working arrangements from part-time to job-shares, condensed working hours, school hours or similar then please do not be put off applying, we would love to hear from you

  • Hybrid office based (Notting Hill Gate, London) and remote working model - whilst you can work from the office five days a week if preferred, you can choose to work up to 2 days a week remotely

  • Team of passionate foodies, working to leave the world in a better place than we found it and, of course, for good food!

What you can expect from our recruitment process

  • 30-minute phone interview with a member of our Talent team and/ or the hiring manager

  • Three 45-minute video (or face to face when allowed) interviews (competency and values focused)

If you need sponsorship to have the right to work full-time in the UK, please let us know.
